"In modern society, energy dense foods are consistently available. Food scarcity resulting in days without food is no longer common. Evolution has adapted us for periods of fasting, allowing our species to survive through paleolithic times. The practice of fasting is re-emerging as a part of our ancestry that has important, well studied health benefits in modern society.
In an N=1 study, I will describe my use of water fasting to manage an ankylosing spondylitis diagnosis and symptoms, allowing me to wean off medications. Fasts of various lengths were used, including 16 hr to 40 hr daily intermittent fasting and longer fasts up to 7 days. Results include gradual control of symptoms and CRP levels during intermittent fasting and a sharp reduction through a 7 day fast. Physical activities through fasting and paleo style diet between fasting periods were maintained. Blood test results were recorded over nearly 4 years."
